Background of the Study
Local markets play a crucial role in the agricultural value chain by facilitating the sale of produce from farmers to consumers. In Gusau Local Government Area (LGA), Zamfara State, local markets serve as a central hub for agricultural products, linking small-scale farmers with the larger economy. Sustainable agriculture, characterized by practices that ensure the long-term viability of farming while minimizing negative environmental impacts, is essential in this region, which faces challenges such as land degradation, water scarcity, and economic instability. Local markets can play a pivotal role in promoting sustainable agricultural practices by providing farmers with access to fair prices, better market information, and opportunities to engage in organic or climate-resilient farming. This study aims to explore how local markets in Gusau contribute to the promotion of sustainable agricultural practices, focusing on their role in enhancing farmer incomes, encouraging sustainable farming methods, and facilitating market access for agricultural products (Aliyu & Mohammed, 2024).
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the central role that local markets play in the agricultural economy of Gusau, there is limited research on how these markets contribute to promoting sustainable agriculture. While markets facilitate the sale of agricultural products, it is unclear how they support or hinder the adoption of sustainable farming practices among local farmers. Factors such as poor infrastructure, limited access to information, and fluctuating prices can affect farmers' ability to engage in sustainable agriculture. This study seeks to assess the extent to which local markets in Gusau contribute to the sustainability of agricultural practices and the challenges farmers face in utilizing these markets effectively.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
• To examine the role of local markets in promoting sustainable agriculture in Gusau.
• To assess the impact of market access on the adoption of sustainable agricultural practices in Gusau.
• To identify the challenges faced by farmers in using local markets to promote sustainable agriculture.
1.4 Research Questions
• How do local markets contribute to promoting sustainable agricultural practices in Gusau?
• What is the relationship between market access and the adoption of sustainable farming methods in Gusau?
• What challenges hinder the effective use of local markets to promote sustainable agriculture in Gusau?
1.5 Research Hypothesis
• H1: Local markets play a significant role in promoting sustainable agriculture in Gusau.
• H2: Market access positively influences the adoption of sustainable farming practices in Gusau.
• H3: Farmers in Gusau face significant challenges in using local markets to promote sustainable agriculture, including infrastructure and pricing issues.
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will provide valuable insights into the role of local markets in fostering sustainable agriculture, particularly in regions like Gusau, where agriculture is a major economic activity. The findings will be important for policymakers, agricultural extension services, and NGOs working to support sustainable agricultural practices. Understanding how local markets contribute to or hinder sustainable agriculture will help improve market infrastructure, enhance access to fair prices, and encourage more farmers to adopt climate-smart practices (Aliyu & Mohammed, 2024). Additionally, the study will inform future policies aimed at improving agricultural sustainability and economic resilience in Gusau.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on local markets in Gusau Local Government Area and will assess their role in promoting sustainable agricultural practices. Limitations include the potential difficulty in obtaining reliable data on the economic impact of local markets and the challenge of assessing the sustainability of farming practices over time.
